FOOD TRUCK QUICK BITE: SABOR DE SAN MIGUEL GUATEMALAN CUISINE

I hadn't been to SOMA StrEat Food Park in a while and with the recent spate of mostly sunny, semi-warm days I decided to hit the place up a few times to see if there was anything new and tasty going on. There's a pretty decent lunch crowd on this workday and perusing through I see a few new trucks and hone in on Sabor de San Miguel--a Guatemalan cuisine purveyor.

It's a tiny square thing that seems more trailer hitch than actual truck, but prices seem reasonable and pictures look decent so why not. With only 6 items to choose from the food I pick probably the least healthy and most un-Guatemalan and get the $8 fried chicken sandwich. But hey, it does come with a side salad so not all bad right?


Deep fried boneless chicken pieces dipped in spicy roasted tomato sauce served on toasted bun with lettuce, tomato. mayo, black bean puree and sour cream. This was cooked to order so I did have to wait a bit but at least it meant the chicken would be hot out of the fryer. Though this wasn't all white meat chicken, it was more like white and dark chunks of chicken that were battered and deep fried. One thing I can say is--at least they weren't dry. After frying they are dipped in a spicy tomato sauce which I did like. It was tangy with a nice hot pepper kick that was balanced off with all the sour cream and mayo. Sadly, the black bean puree got a little lost as everything became just one big mix.  

My biggest complaint here would be the dipping of the chicken after frying it. Unfortunately this made the coating soggy and took most of the crunch out of the sandwich. It would have been much better to have the sauce as a side dip or just a spread on the sandwich in order to keep the crunchiness in tact. Plus you don't really need sour cream AND mayo, I think just the sour cream would have been fine as it is a nice balance for the spice. Overall, the sandwich does have some decent flavor and they were another place that did a butter/toasted bun--which everyone should be doing so cheers for that. The "side salad" was some chopped lettuce with purple onions and 2 slices of tomato with Italian dressing on top. Kind of a throwaway but it does count toward one's veggie total for the day.

To recap: sandwich mostly good, some decent flavors that sometimes get muddled with too much on it plus the sauced chicken made the deep fried coating soggy. If they edit down toppings and don't dip the chicken it's a winner--as is--it's okay. As for the "side salad", let's just forget that ever happened.
