(UPDATE: Seems they given this up and the owner is strictly concentrating on his catering and brick and mortar location called Market & Rye.)
Me and the SO are cruising down Valencia Street and pass by McCoppin Street plaza where Off the Grid has a Saturday food truck thing that goes on. I say "hey, I'm hungry let's stop." So we pull over and the parking goddess is on our side as we get a spot right on the corner. This day there are 5 trucks and after perusing each menu, which I like to do and the SO likes to roll his eyes at me, we decided to give the 3 Sum Eats truck a go.
We pick the turkey hash with a side of sautéed spinach and mushrooms and scrambled eggs. Then add on an order of deviled eggs and deep fried white and green asparagus. I think we both agreed that the turkey has was not good. Besides being an unappealing mushy brown it had a strange taste and texture that kept both of us from finishing it. We couldn't put our finger on it but it was like they put too much of a particular seasoning in it--something akin to tarragon or sage and it just overwhelmed the dish and gave it a very unpleasant after taste. As for the spinach/mushroom and scrambled eggs they were okay but weirdly they were not seasoned at all--they were in desperate need of salt and pepper but even that didn't really make them stand out from any other I've ever had.
The deviled eggs looked good and came with Hungarian paprika and a piece of maple bacon on top. Sadly they also came with way too mustard spice brown mustard mixed into the filling and that was pretty much all you could taste. I was really disappointed cuz' I love a good deviled egg--this won't it and again we couldn't finish them. As for the fried asparagus--this they completely right. It was covered in a light tempura like batter and cooked through so it was slightly crunchy yet done, we enjoyed this dish the best of the ones we had and finished off every piece. And at only $3 a side it made this a tasty bargain everyone should try when they have it on their menu (as I suspect it is probably seasonal).
Since we were 1 for 4 in dishes it left me still hungry so I decided to spring for their red velvet twinkie with mascarpone filling.
This to me was a brilliant idea that suffered from marginal execution--but could be corrected. The red velvet cake part tasted like it should but it was a little on the dry side which might not have been so bad had there been more filling. I suggest they adjust their recipe to get a moister cake (add more oil or butter) and to also add more of the mascarpone filling to really cream it up. If they are able to make just those 2 adjustments I think this would be a total winner...as it is now it's just eh.
Overall if they can just make some changes in a few things they'd be really good, otherwise, just get the asparagus, if they have it, and get something else from another truck.
